Galvez: Cebu hospitals now in ‘safe zone’

THE combined number of daily Covid-19 admissions in all Cebu private hospitals continued to decline with the daily number of recovered Covid-19 patients being discharged from the Cebu private hospitals continuing to exceed admissions in the past weeks.

This is according to Cabinet Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer, during his report to President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday night, September 20, 2021.

Galvez said this “good news” in the current Covid-19 situation of Cebu, where most private hospitals in Cebu island are located, resulted in the continued decline in the combined capacity utilization rate of all Cebu private hospitals to 40.1 percent as of September 18, 2021.

He said this improvement in Cebu’s situation came after the island followed the protocols set by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging and Infectious Diseases.

“At the same time, they executed yung magandang barangay response, maganda po ang ginawa po ng mga unit ng DILG (Department of the Interior and Local Government) at talaga po yung mga LGU (local government units) ay sumunod po sa ating mga protocols ang nakita po natin bumaba po yung kaso sa Cebu,” he said.

“Baka pag bumaba po yung kaso sa Cebu baka bumaba rinpo yung kaso sa Metro Manila,” he added.

Galvez said there were only 13 regular Covid emergency room (ER) patients remaining spread in all the 16 private hospitals in Cebu, based on the daily report submitted as of September 18.

He also said there were zero intensive care unit (ICU) Covid ER beds also awaiting admission into the ICU of the Cebu private hospitals.

Sought for comment, Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, Department of Health (DOH) Central Visayas chief pathologist and the spokesperson for Visayas Covid-19 Vaccination Operations Center, said the containment measures including all the protocols that Cebu has set in place during the first and second waves of Covid cases are still effective with the recent Delta variant-driven surge.

She mentioned the revisions and additional provisions made like the “Oplan Puyo” or Stay At Home rules, liquor ban, enhancement of temporary treatment and monitoring facilities and the “unwavering” commitment of Cebu’s medical front liners and the collaboration of public and private sectors.

“We thank the national government for recognizing the efforts of Cebu. Worth mentioning is the fact that Cebu can be a benchmark on how surges of cases can be successfully handled,” Loreche said.

Moreover, Cebu City Emergency Operations Center deputy chief and councilor Joel Garganera, on Tuesday, September 21, said at 47.6 percent, all public hospitals in the City are also now at the safe zone.

He said public hospitals now have their step down facilities like Cebu City Medical Center to Cebu City Quarantine Center, St. Anthony Mother and Child Hospital to City Central Barangay Isolation Center, and Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center to the Department of Public Works and Highways step down facility.

He said these hospitals have mastered the triaging already wherein instead of letting post partum Covid positive patients stay for three to four more days in the hospitals, they are referred to step down facilities, making more hospital beds available for other patients. (WBS)
