NINETEEN months into the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) remain unable to enter Macau, according to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (Polo) there.
In a virtual press briefing, Philippine Labor Attaché to Macau Ma Nena German said the special administrative region of China remains closed to non-residents of Macau.
“The uncertainty clouding Macau’s economy, as well as its recovery is always anchored on the pandemic situation. The same holds true if they will allow deployment again. For now, they still aren’t,” said German.
“They still won’t allow non-Macau residents to enter here,” she added.
The labor official also said that OFWs continue to lose their jobs in Macau due to the stagnant economic recovery.
From a total of 34,180 OFWs prior to the pandemic, she said the number has gone down to 28,639 as of July 2021.
“The effect on the economy of Macau is massive. It resulted in the termination of employment of our OFWs,” she said.
German said majority of the OFWs in Macau are employed in hotels, casinos, restaurants, and other tourism-related industries, as well as household service workers. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
