TWO incumbent mayors, who are seeking reelection under
Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) Cusi Wing at the Third District of Negros Occidental, are still hoping that Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio will run for president in next year’s elections.
This developed as Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa is now the PDP-Laban Cusi faction presidential standard-bearer.
Dela Rosa, a former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, filed his certificate of candidacy for president last week.
“As a Saraviahanon, we will go for Sara (Duterte),” EB Magalona town Mayor Marvin Malacon said after filing his candidacy on Friday, October 8, with the whole Asenso Tumandok team.
Negros Occidental Third District Representative Jose Francisco Benitez, Abang Lingkod Party-list Representative Stephen Joseph Paduano, and Board Member Andrew Montelibano, also of Third District, were present to show support to the group.
Benitez is also a member of PDP-Laban Cusi faction, with his elder brother, former congressman and now Bacolod mayoralty candidate Alfredo “Albee” Benitez, as the provincial chairman.
The Asenso Tumandok of EB Magalona includes Vice Mayor Eric Matulac and eight incumbent councilors.
Another PDP-Laban Cusi wing member, Silay City Mayor Mark Andrew Arthur Golez disclosed on Thursday that he is still committed to supporting Duterte-Carpio amid hopes that she will run for president.
Malacon and Golez were among the more than a dozen of mayors in Negros Occidental who earlier declared support to Duterte-Carpio.
As a member of the League of Cities of the Philippines Board of Directors, Golez said Duterte-Carpio extended a lot of help and assistance to Silay City.
There is no reason not to help her, he said.
“I am not doing this for myself, I am doing this for the whole Silaynons,” the mayor added.
If Duterte-Carpio will not run, Golez said he will decide later on whom to support for president.
The presidential daughter, who earlier filed her candidacy as mayor of Davao City, remained firm in her decision not to run as president.
Though the COC filing has ended last October 8, she may still seek for the country’s top post through substitution within their party or coalition’s ticket that can be done until November 15, 2021.
