THE Provincial Government of Davao Oriental declared a diarrhea outbreak in four barangays in the municipality of Manay following the deaths of six residents.
In a press statement, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported a total of 44 cases — eight in Barangay Guza, seven in Barangay Central, five in Barangay Del Pilar, and 24 in Barangay Cayawan, which was identified as the most affected barangay.
Out of the 44 cases, 26 have already recovered, 10 are under home management, and two are still admitted to the Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital-Manay. Meanwhile, two out of the six deaths died due to acute renal failure secondary to severe dehydration.
The provincial government also said residents who were rushed to the hospital have been tested for coronavirus using rapid antigen test and all have tested negative. Food poisoning was also ruled out.
Governor Nelson Dayanghirang through the Provincial Health Office has ordered immediate conduct of an investigation.
As immediate intervention, the Provincial Health Office has provided technical assistance by providing chlorine and aqua tabs for 350 households. Residents were also advised not to use their water for drinking until it is deemed safe.
The PHO is set to conduct rectal swabbing of the residents on Saturday, October 8, to determine causative agent of diarrhea and to rule out possible cholera.
Provincial Task Force on Covid-19 Action Officer Dr. Reden Bersaldo has assured that they are in close coordination with the Rural Health Unit to address the current situation and to prevent further deaths.
