Octa sees 4,000 new Covid cases in PH on New Year's Day

THE rise in coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases to close 2021 is not expected to end with the start of 2022.

This as the independent Octa Research is projecting new infections in the National Capital Region (NCR) to climb to 3,000 Saturday, January 1, 2021, and as much as 4,000 for the whole Philippines.

“We project to about 3,000 new cases (more or less) in the NCR on January 1, 2022, with 4,000 new cases (more or less) in the country,” said Octa Fellow Guido David in a social media post.

He said this is because the seven-day average in positivity rate of Metro Manila has increased to 9.53 percent.

A positivity rate of five percent or below is considered “acceptable” for the World Health Organization (WHO).

He also pointed out how the reproduction number in the NCR has increased to 3.19.

According to the WHO, the ideal reproduction rate is less than 1, as having greater than 1, means that the infection will spread exponentially.

Because of this, David said it should be expected that the classification of NCR will go up once again.

“NCR remained at ‘moderate risk,’ but is likely to be classified as ‘high risk’ by January 2, 2022,” David said.
